Important announcement – the event is in jeopardy

Despite a polite notice about only accessing Barbon and Middleton Fell via access points and established footpaths there have been several incidents of runners off path trespassing and with dogs not on leads. This has upset local tenant farmers and they have threatened cancelling the event.

In light of these issues we have agreed with the Roger and Pauline Bainbridge that anyone recceing the courses may park in the event parking field at grid ref 632858 and access the courses from there.

Please do not access the land from Barbon village.

Please act responsibly when visiting the area and keep dogs on leads at all times. Individuals not respecting the area will get their team disqualified or may lead to the even being cancelled. Thank you for your cooperation.

Dallam running club and Howgill Harriers are delighted to have the opportunity to host this years relays.

The event centre at Middleton, Barbon offers an excellent venue with access to the fells that provide a backdrop to the area. As only one short race is currently run in the area the Relay offers the chance to explore a relatively unknown part of Cumbria away from the usual honey pots.

We are indebted to Lord of the Manor Chris Harrison-Beck, Lord Shuttleworth, Farmer of the fields, Roger and Pauline Bainbridge for the use of their fields and thank Middleton and Barbon Commoners association for their support in allowing us to use this area.

We are busy in our organising committee getting things together for the big day! This page will be refreshed as we pull things together.

If you are wishing to camp for the weekend Roger and Pauline will be offering this option from the Friday night. There will also be food and a bar available on the Saturday night at the pre-race party, booking essential.

We would ask your co-operation that you only access the upland area from agreed access points if you are looking to recce the area. The courses will be on the web site soon and will be available to be walked on the 17th, 18th October before the event.

We will be posting more detailed information as the date gets closer. However, if you have any burning questions please e-mail the website and we will endeavour to find you the answer.
Yours Relays Co-ordinator,
Fraser Livesey

Amended 2nd October:

Final instructions:

A copy of these instructions including a sheet on how to attach your dibbers is available as a pdf file.

26th Annual UKA British Fell and Hill Running Championships

Sunday 19th October 2014, Middleton, Lune Valley, Cumbria
Hosted by Dallam Running Club and Howgill Harriers

Thank you for entering this year's relays, please read these final instructions carefully.

On line team declaration

Team captains:
Please declare your team(s) as soon as possible on the SI website if you have not done so already. You will need the names of all 6 runners in each team. You will be able to make amendments up until 20:00 on Friday 17th October. We will assume that any team failing to fully declare on line by the cut off time will not be turning up on the day.

Registration will be open at 16:00 until 19:00 on Saturday 18th October and from 7:00 until 9:00 on Sunday morning. If you have multiple teams entered from your club it makes life easier if all packs are collected at once (it avoids confusion of the wrong team collecting the wrong set of numbers).

In your registration packs you will receive:

  • maps for legs 1, 2 and 4
  • 4 dibbers that are to be used specifically for each of the legs – please do not get them mixed up
  • dibber instruction sheet
  • a set of 6 numbers, colour coded and labelled for each leg (with safety pins)
  • 6 meal tickets.

The race will start at 10:00, your first runners will be collected into the starting pen where there will be a compulsory kit check. The pen will be open from 9:40. All legs will start from this point so it is important that your next leg runners are in the pen before your previous runners arrive back. All runners will be kit checked, make sure you arrive in time for this or your changeover will be delayed. This is up to you and your team to manage. There will be a commentator calling as many teams as possible as they visit the last control, but do not rely on this.

Fell and Dale caterers will be on the field from mid-afternoon on the Saturday with hot food available for campers and those who have been to recce the courses. The bar will also be open at this time.

Young Farmers will be serving bacon butties from 7am and Middleton Parish will be serving drinks and cake from 10am.

Fell and Dale caterers will be providing food for runners via your food ticket and will also be providing food for purchase through the day. Lunesdale young farmers are providing bacon butties up until lunchtime. Barbon WI are selling tea and cakes throughout the day (to be honest, I've no idea is that is the same as Middleton Parish, but cakes and drinks will be available). For those with a sweet tooth there will be an ice cream van. Sedbergh primary school PTFA are running the bar and have promised local real ale!

Please ensure that you have contacted Roger or Pauline Bainbridge (015242 76214 or 07800 990689 if you intend to camp. Your fee for camping also includes your car park fee.

Car Parking:
Please try to arrive 4 to a car if possible and have the right change of £5 per car and remember it is £10 for single occupancy cars.

Prize giving:
We would hope to commence prize giving by 4pm.

Timed out teams:
We have altered our time out time this now stands at 13:15. Any teams that arrive back from leg 2 after this time will not be allowed to start. This will be strictly enforced.

Mass start:
Leg 4 mass start will be at 14:45.

Navigation leg:
This pairs leg will pick up a map 400 meters from the start.

Please ensure at registration that you and your team can fulfil all the FRA rules and requirements and the rules of the relay.
• Legs 2 and 3 pairs MUST stay together
• ALL kit will be checked

We hope you have a fantastic day in what is a little known corner of Cumbria!

EMAIL: Online Si-Card Sales:

SPORTident electronic timing will be used at this event and each finisher will get a printout showing
their overall time and times at the checkpoints within seconds of finishing.

Each competitor carries a SPORTident Timing Card attached to the wrist. Your card is provided at event registration.
The card is attached to the wrist using a Tyvek band.

  • Remove a tear-off strip on one end of the band and join both ends
together around your wrist - not too tight as your wrist will swell during the race.
  • Warm up the seal between your thimb and first finger.
  • Take care putting the card on as once it is attached the band can only be removed with scissors.
  • Don't carry the card and your watch on the same wrist.
  • The card should point towards your finger tips.
  • You will need to dip your card either on the way to the start or as you start.
  • NO CARD, NO START. Dip your card into the hole in a station at the checkpoint/s en route to record your time. The station issues one or more beeps and LED flashes to confirm that your time has been recorded.

At the FINISH you also dip your card. Then you progress along a taped route (under no time pressure)
to the download area where you will dip your card in a station. This identifies you and links you to your
finish time. You will be handed a small print out which shows your time. Your card will then be removed
from your wrist by a marshal. At some events you will also receive a certificate at the same time.
If you register and either do not take part in the event or you retire, it is an essential safety
requirement that you must return your SPORTident card to an official at the Start/Finish.
and you may not be allowed to participate in future events.
